History
The Institute for Social Studies (ISS) was established in 2011 by academics and research professionals as an independent, non-profit, non-partisan think tank dedicated to research, develop and produce reports that aim to improve the lives of the Somaliland citizens and promote greater use of social science research in policy-making.
The Institute aspires to serve as a vehicle for social change and a tool for tackling the multifaceted challenges that we face with the dawn of the 21stcentury which have both socio-economic and political dimensions. These challenges include: environmental degradation risks, climate change shocks, security dilemmas, conflicts, human rights violations, and other social issues those feed grievances and exist in Somaliland and the region as well.
Besides its research work, the ISS have been involved in consultancy and training services to governmental and non-governmental organizations on the issues: civic education and governance, human rights, environmental preservation and other contemporary matters. To achieve its purposes, the Institute employs a mix of quality research and effective advocacy in regards to social issues in Somaliland and the wider Horn African region. While on the other hand, building joint research projects and policy programs with other national and regional institutions and universities engaged in the social science research.
