Pastoralism
Pastoralists in Somaliland like elsewhere in the African continent’s pastoral communities have continuously suffered from a long history of political, economical, and socio-cultural isolation and marginalization. The problems facing pastoralists’ have been exacerbated by the recurrent and complex natural disasters and calamities include but not limited to frequent droughts, floods, diseases, etc; coupled with human generated disasters. Due to both man-made and natural catastrophes, the pastoralists have emerged as the most poor and vulnerable section of their respective societies.
The Institute inspires to conduct researches on pastoralism aimed at persuading the decision-making elites in the Somaliland and in the Horn as well to formulate policies and plans for one hand, and identify the challenges and barriers for the other. These policies and plans could help the pastoral communities and may lead Somaliland in collaboration with the other regional governments and institutions in tackling those challenges together since those pastoral communities deny the political borders and cross it regularly in pursuit of pasture and water.
